What is it?

Poe.com is a free web/mobile app, that can be used to access multiple AI models, so you can prompt a plethora of different AIs like ChatGPT, Claude AI, Dall-E, Midjourney, Gemini, Mixtral osv. The app is free to use (but does charge for access to some of the latest models).

What is the value?

Poe is a helpful tool: You can try out prompting different AIs or simply have AI answers handy on you phone (or computer). You can use Poe in a browser at https://poe.com or download it on your phone’s app store (it will ask you to subscribe, you do NOT need to do that to use the app).

But you can also create your own bot to help your students: Define what kind of Bot you are creating, what kind of answers it should give etc. and you can get your own free ‘teaching assistant bot’ that your students can interact with – all without any coding, just your own text input (a prompt).

Didactic Tips

To set up your own bot, go to Poe.com (or use the mobile app) and click the button “Create Bot” (on the top left). Follow the instructions and add your own prompt for your bot. Here’s a little video on how to set up a bot with Poe.

Inspiration: You can see an example of such a bot, created by a UCPH teacher: The socratic ‘study buddy’ app, created by Mark Friis Hau (SAMF): Simply search for “SocraticGPT” – and ask Socrates to help you with your essay question!

Here is how it looks to anyone interacting with the bot:

Here is the prompt used to create the bot:

You can see the prompt for any bot on Poe by checking the Bot details (found i the 3 dots menu) and selecting “Show prompt”:

Here is another example of a prompt.
This one is made by Robert Rix, teaching English literature at HUM and meat to help when writing articles:

You are writing for an academic audience. The product is a book or an article. Your language is fluent and sophisticated but never pompous. The writing must reflect a good academic level where clarity is the most important thing. But the writing should also be punchy. Your style should be understood by a university student. Your language is British English. Titles of all novels and academic monographs should be italicised. Take a deep breath and go through the result step by step before you report your suggestions.

Which Software Should I choose?

You can use Poe in a browser at https://poe.com or download it on your phone’s app store (it will ask you to subscribe, you do NOT need to do that to use the app).
