This shift in integrating AI tools to enhance learning has allowed students to develop ethical AI usage while enabling instructors to focus on high-level academic thinking rather than grammar corrections. This case shares key insights and best practices for fostering responsible AI use in academic writing.

Abstract: When ChatGPT emerged I had multiple colleagues, ask me how on earth we were going to police its use in our popular masters course “Scientific writing, planning and presentations”. Instead of restricting use, we have fully embraced the use of AI tools and are completing our second year in what has turned out to be a very happy brave new world. We have discovered that the course is an excellent vehicle to for students to develop thoughtful and ethical use of AI tools in their writing and have the wonderful experience that we can now spend our time focusing on high-level ideas that are hard to learn from a book (or AI tool) instead of correcting grammar and commas. In this talk, I will detail some of our experiences teaching this course and our advice for effective ways to introduce these tools and encourage responsible rather than lazy usage.
